Five day closure of State Route 41 north of Cholame begins June 9
Closure is part of a larger project to widen Highway 46 East from west of Davis Road to west of Antelope Road
– State Route 41 will fully close for five days from Highway 46 East to Reef Station beginning Monday, June 9, through Friday, June 13, as construction continues on the Highway 46/State Route 41 “wye” interchange project in the Cholame area, according to a press release from Cal Trans.
The closure is part of a larger project to widen Highway 46 East from west of Davis Road to west of Antelope Road. The project will eliminate the current at-grade intersection of Highway 46 and State Route 41.
Travelers heading east on Highway 46 will detour via State Route 33 before reaching State Route 41. Travelers heading south on State Route 41 will also use State Route 33 to reach Highway 46. Delays along the detour are not expected to exceed 90 minutes. Travelers are advised to plan their routes and timing accordingly.
The roadwork during this closure will allow for connections between the new Highway 46 East/State Route 41 interchange and State Route 41.
The full widening project is expected to be completed by spring of 2026. All businesses along the Highway 46 East corridor remain open during construction. Atkinson Construction of Irvine is the contractor for the $147 million project.
This work follows five previously completed widening phases between Paso Robles and the interchange. A $124 million segment from near the Shandon Rest Area to east of the Jack Ranch Café finished in May. Prior phases include a $47 million segment completed in 2019 from McMillan Canyon Road to Lucy Brown Road; a $38 million segment from Almond Drive to McMillan Canyon Road finished in 2016; a $54 million section from Geneseo Road to east of Almond Drive completed in 2014; and a $30 million segment from Airport Road to Geneseo Road completed in 2010.
