Cal Poly robotics team to host regional robotics tournament March 1
– The Cal Poly Gear Slingers robotics team will host the Gear Slingers Open 2025, a VEX U regional tournament, on March 1 at Cal Poly. The event will feature collegiate teams competing in the “High Stakes” challenge, using custom-built robots to execute complex scoring strategies.
The tournament is open to the public and will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Advanced Technology Laboratories (Building 7). Attendees can park in Parking Lot H-2, located directly behind the Bonderson Engineering Projects Center.
In addition to hosting the regional event, the Gear Slingers are preparing for the VEX U Robotics World Championship in Dallas, Texas. The team enters the World Championship undefeated this season after a dominant performance at the Mt. SAC VEX U High Stakes Tournament, where they won the Excellence Award, Tournament Champion, and Skills Champion titles.
Their success at the regional level earned them a spot at the World Championship, where they aim to build on last year’s historic run. At the 2024 World Championship, the Gear Slingers became division champions in their first-ever appearance at the international competition, advancing to the final match in the VEX Dome. The team finished as one of the top two collegiate robotics teams in the world.
