Volunteers needed for smoke alarm installation event in Atascadero

Event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Villa Margarita Mobile Home Park in Atascadero

– The American Red Cross Pacific Coast Chapter is calling for volunteers to help install hundreds of free smoke alarms for local families during the Sound the Alarm home fire safety event in Atascadero on Saturday, March 1.

“Sound the Alarm is a rewarding way to give back and directly help local families,” said Lori Wilson, interim regional CEO and executive director of the Pacific Coast Chapter. “It’s a day of coming together to support one another, especially those most vulnerable to home fires. A working smoke alarm can be the difference between survival and tragedy — and as a community, we can help our neighbors stay safe by ensuring they have these lifesaving devices.”

Those interested in volunteering can register at SoundTheAlarm.org/CCR. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Villa Margarita Mobile Home Park in Atascadero, where training will be provided for volunteers before teams, made up of Red Cross members and the Atascadero Fire Department, visit area homes to install smoke alarms and share fire safety information with residents.

Free smoke alarm installation for local residents

Pacific Coast residents in need of a smoke alarm can also visit SoundTheAlarm.org/CCR to schedule an appointment for a free installation during the event. The 20-minute home visits will include installation of the alarm as well as education on fire prevention, the causes of home fires, what to do if a fire starts, and how to create an escape plan.

Home fire campaign saves lives

The Sound the Alarm event is part of the national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which has helped save at least 2,246 lives — including 15 in Central California — since its launch in October 2014. Locally, the Pacific Coast Chapter and its partners have installed more than 16,500 smoke alarms and made more than 6,030 households safer across the Tri-County area.

Support the Red Cross

Thanks to donations, all services provided during the Sound the Alarm event are free. Those who cannot volunteer are encouraged to donate at SoundTheAlarm.org/CCR to help people prepare for, respond to, and recover from home fires, which account for the majority of U.S. disasters the Red Cross responds to every eight minutes.
