Grover Beach man arrested for DUI after ramming police car, injuring officer

Officer suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital

– A Grover Beach man was arrested after police say he intentionally rammed a patrol vehicle, injuring an officer, according to a press release sent by the Grover Beach Police Department.

Police arrested Steven Tomis, 62, on Feb. 2 after responding to a report of a disturbance involving a vehicle in the 400 block of Leoni Drive. Officers found Tomis driving a 1974 Ford pickup truck and determined he had collided with another vehicle.

When officers attempted to contact Tomis, he evaded the first arriving officer and tried to flee in the truck. As a second officer arrived and activated emergency lights to stop the vehicle, Tomis accelerated and steered directly into the patrol car, colliding head-on with the officer.

Tomis was taken into custody without further incident. The officer suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital. Both vehicles sustained major damage, including the patrol car, which had been in service for only a few weeks.

Authorities determined Tomis was driving under the influence of alcohol. He was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, and driving under the influence with injury.
