Lane closures begin this week for Wellsona Road construction
Temporary barriers and pavement installation prepare for mid-February traffic shift
– Construction near the intersection of Highway 101 and Wellsona Road will require overnight lane closures on Wednesday, Jan. 29, and Thursday, Jan. 30, as part of the Wellsona Road safety improvement project.
Caltrans will close the northbound and southbound left lanes of Highway 101 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. to allow for the placement of temporary pavement delineation and barriers along the inside shoulder of the highway.
Once the temporary barriers are installed, all lanes will remain open while crews install temporary pavement within the median. This work is in preparation for the Stage 2 traffic shift, scheduled for mid-February.
The project aims to reduce the number and severity of collisions at the intersection by constructing an undercrossing beneath US 101, south of the existing intersection. The undercrossing will eliminate the need for left turns across US 101 traffic.
The new undercrossing will feature a 112-foot-long bridge. A frontage road will connect the undercrossing with Wellsona Road on both sides of the highway.
A bicycle detour will be in place during construction. The San Paso Truck Stop will remain open and accessible.
CalPortland Construction of Santa Maria is the contractor for the $12.2 million project, which is expected to be completed in early 2026.
