Construction begins on Mission Plaza project in downtown San Luis Obispo

Improvements include the construction of a café kiosk with outdoor seating, replacement of public restrooms, restoration of the historic Murray Adobe

– Construction on Mission Plaza in downtown San Luis Obispo began Jan. 13 and is expected to continue for approximately nine months. The project, a collaboration between the City of San Luis Obispo and Quincon Incorporated, aims to revitalize the plaza while preserving its historical and cultural significance.

Work is focused on the area around the plaza restrooms and the historic Murray Adobe, which have been fenced off during construction. Commuters are experiencing minor traffic disruptions at the corner of Broad Street and Monterey Street, including intermittent closures and detours. Pedestrian safety and accessibility are being maintained with clearly marked crosswalk reroutes into the plaza.

The project includes the construction of a café kiosk with outdoor seating, replacement of public restrooms, and restoration of the historic Murray Adobe. Additional site improvements feature new paving, enhanced lighting, and updated landscaping. Construction is scheduled to conclude by fall.

“Mission Plaza has always been a special gathering space for our community, and this project ensures it will remain a space where memories are made, events are celebrated, and our city’s rich history is honored,” said Sandra Golonka, project manager for the City of San Luis Obispo. “We appreciate everyone’s patience and support as we work together to bring this vision to life.”

Planning for the project began in 2017 with the development of an official concept plan. The revitalization aligns with the city’s goals of economic resiliency, cultural vitality, and fiscal sustainability while fostering a sustainable and inclusive public space.
