Free civic leadership course offered for high school girls in Atascadero

– The Atascadero branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) has announced the launch of “Gov Trek,” a virtual civic leadership program designed for high school junior and senior girls. The program aims to inspire the next generation to pursue careers in public service and elected office.

Gov Trek consists of seven two-hour sessions, offering students interactive and insightful activities related to women in politics, career options, and the inner workings of political campaigns. It also culminates in a group competition to create a realistic campaign simulation.

The program is open to high school juniors and seniors in 2024 and is completely free of charge.

Gov Trek is conducted online, with seven two-hour Saturday sessions, each focusing on different aspects of careers in politics, public service, and political campaigns. Students have the opportunity to learn from speakers, including current and former legislators, staffers, and consultants. They will also work in groups with an adult facilitator to complete activities such as speechwriting and political message design. The final project involves creating a campaign simulation, which is evaluated by industry judges, with awards in various categories.

Gov Trek is developed, delivered, and administered by AAUW California, while student recruitment is overseen by AAUW Atascadero.

2024 Schedule

All sessions will be conducted via Zoom, with students meeting for seven consecutive Saturday sessions from 10 a.m. to noon on the following dates:

  • February 3
  • February 10
  • February 17
  • February 24
  • March 2
  • March 9 (campaign simulation video due by 11:59 p.m.)
  • March 16 (campaign competition from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.)

An information session is scheduled for Nov.12 at 7 p.m., where interested participants can learn more about Gov Trek, its benefits, requirements, and what sets this free leadership education program apart. Registration is required and can be completed at AAUW’s website: https://www.aauw-ca.org/gov-trek/.
