First phase of broadband fiber internet installation included as part of downtown paving project

Phase is part of a larger effort to enhance broadband internet in the community

– As part of the Atascadero City Council’s Key Priorities, the city has begun work on installing broadband fiber internet infrastructure to improve and expand high-speed internet to residents and businesses. The project was a result of a collaborative partnership with the City of Paso Robles to develop a broadband strategic plan that included data analysis, and identification of broadband needs and gaps in Northern San Luis Obispo County. With an increased demand for remote work, online education, telehealth doctor appointments, virtual meetings, and more, residents and businesses increasingly rely on stable, fast, reliable internet.

The city has contracted with Astound Broadband to install the broadband infrastructure, with phase 1 focused on the Downtown. Phase 1 will include installing a 10 Gb/s fiber network connecting twelve city facilities with fiber optic cable. As the current city network is served with speeds less than 1Gb/s, this new network represents a substantial upgrade in performance. The upgrade will improve data security during local or regional disasters, ensuring clear and stable communications for police and fire. The city will work to make sure that construction impacts on businesses, customers, and residents in the downtown are minimal and a part of the existing downtown paving project.

Once Phase 1 is complete, Astound will begin Phase 2, which will include installing broadband infrastructure in residential neighborhoods. Astound Broadband anticipates that service will be available to residential customers around the spring of 2024.

Residents are reminded to drive carefully through work zones, follow traffic control signage, and be respectful to construction workers.
