Water bills could be on the rise for Atascadero customers

Rate increase would add $4 for the average customer, report says

Atascadero Mutual Water Company customers may see their bills increase next month, according to a recent report by the Tribune.

The water company’s staff will ask their board of directors to approve an approximately 7-percent increase in water rates at an upcoming meeting in April. The proposed increase would add $4 for the average customer living in a single-family home, according to the report.

The rate increase will go towards operational costs — such as electricity, water treatment chemicals and insurance — as well as capital investments such as construction of a new booster station and repairs to existing wells, valves, water services and pipelines, the report says.

The company also “anticipates significant costs” to remove polyfluoroalkyl substances — also known as PFAS or “forever chemicals” — from wells that contain the contaminants above the response levels established by the California State Water Resources Board last year.
