The Dixie Fire is the fifteenth biggest fire in California’s history so far

Atascadero Fire & Emergency Services‘ firefighters have been helping to fight the Dixie Fire as a part of the statewide mutual system.

The Dixie Fire is currently the fifteenth largest fire in California’s history according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The fire began on July 14 at 12 a.m., but the cause has yet to be determined and is still under investigation. Over 200,000 acres have been affected across Butte County and Plumas County, seven structures have been damaged and 31 structures destroyed.

34 helicopters, 409 engines, 198 bulldozers, 90 water tenders, 5,105 personnel and 85 crews have all been assigned to fight the fire and 23% of the fire is currently contained.

Atascadero’s own firefighters have been helping for weeks as a part of the mutual aid system, which allows fire departments to extend help to other departments in the form of equipment and personnel during overwhelming emergencies. The firefighters of Atascadero have been committing anywhere from 14-21 days at a time, while those remaining in Atascadero have covered their shifts.
