Twin Cities awarded for advanced certification as a primary stroke center
–The Joint Commission has awarded a certificate of distinction to Twin Cities Community Hospital for advanced certification as a primary stroke center.
To achieve this distinction, Twin Cities underwent a rigorous, on-site review where reviewers evaluated compliance with related certification standards. The standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts, and patients. The reviewers also conducted onsite observations and interviews.
“The distinction recognizes Twin Cities Community Hospital’s quality, caring, and commitment of staff and physicians,” said Mark Lisa, CEO of Tenet Health Central Coast. “During a stroke emergency, about two million brain cells die per minute and this certification signals to the community that they are in expert, caring hands at Twin Cities in their time of critical need. We are extremely proud to have Advanced Certification as a Primary Stroke Center.”
The Joint Commission did not have a single negative finding and commended Twin Cities on many items, including:
- Plan of care
- Stroke order set
- Daily, morning safety huddles
- Access to immediate triage (including location of triage nurse in the Emergency Department)
- Mobile Intensive Care Nurse (MICN) program in the Emergency Department
- Rehabilitation services
“Advanced certification as a primary stroke center recognizes health care organizations committed to fostering continuous quality improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, chief operating officer, accreditation and certification operations, and chief nursing executive for the Joint Commission. “We commend Twin Cities Community Hospital for using certification to reduce variation in its clinical processes and to strengthen its program structure and management framework for stroke patients.”
