San Luis Obispo to ‘March on the Polls’ Saturday
–San Luis Obispo is joining nationwide efforts to increase midterm election voter turnout. Groups across the U.S. are holding “March on the Poll” events this week in places including Houston, Spokane, Wash., Little Rock, Ark., Winston-Salem, N.C., Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. In a showing of civic pride and political activism, a broad coalition of local groups welcome the public to a rally and march through San Luis Obispo on Nov. 3, starting at 12 p.m. in Mitchell Park. This event is open to all.
The demonstration will begin with a rally and continue with a march to the County Clerk’s Office where the groups have arranged to turn in their mail-in-ballots for the upcoming midterm election slated for Nov. 6.
Speakers include Rabbi Janice Mehring of Congregation Ohr Tzafon, the NAACP SLO County President Steve Vines, activist and March for our Lives organizer Keanu LyDay and Women’s March SLO Lead Andrea Chmelik. Katie Voice has offered pro-bono sign language interpreting.
Organizers would like to remind all attendees that in order to comply with electioneering guidelines, they need to abide by the “no visible display or audible dissemination of information that advocates for or against any candidate or measure on the ballot within 100 feet of a polling place,” which the County Clerk office is.
While signs, shirts, buttons and more are welcome at the rally and march, attendees need to remove or cover their flair as they approach the clerk’s office.
