Update: Fire ignites in Atascadero, homes evacuated 

–On Aug. 17, Atascadero Fire responded to a fire in the riverbed. Crews worked hard to hold the fire to roughly 10 acres and were able to keep any structures from burning. Crews remained on scene overnight and continued to mop up the next day.

What is now coined the “Gabarda Fire” near Atascadero is holding at approx 10 acres and is now 50-percent contained as of last night, according to Cal Fire. Rocky Canyon road is now open to traffic. Fire equipment is still in the area. 15 engines, two bulldozers, two hand crews, and one water tender responded from multiple SLO County agencies.

–A wildland fire is reported in the 6700 block of Rocky Canyon Road near Atascadero, according to an announcement posted by the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department. The wind is spreading the fire close to homes in that area. Several homes have been evacuated. If you live in this area, be prepared to evacuate if asked to do so.
