Atascadero hosts West Coast Winter Series Pro Scooter Contest
—The George C. Bailey Atascadero Skate Park hosted the West Coast Winter Series Pro Scooter Contest on Saturday, Jan. 13. The championship event is composed of four contests, and the final event lasted a week. Special events, such as training sessions and lessons, were included. This contest was a qualifying contest for the International Scooter Association World Championship.
Attendance was high for the contest, and ultimately over 75 qualifiers from all over the United States competed. Winners include Atascadero local and ten year old Claire Parks for the girls division and Paso Robles residents Ben Garcia and Josh Juarez. Chris Farris, also an Atascadero resident, was MC and is one of the world’s top pro scooter athletes, according to a presentation by city manager Rachelle Rickard at the Feb. 13 city council meeting. Other pro athletes offered their experiences by judging the contest.
“A lot of the athletes really enjoyed being here in Atascadero and we certainly enjoyed having them… great event,” said Rickard.
The A-Town Park is located at 5493 Traffic Way and is open seven days a week. Hours are from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Friday and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Other opportunities include internships, mentoring, and a free program after school hours, according to Rickard.
