Fabric weaving demonstration hosted at Morro Bay Art Association
–Morro Bay Art Association is presenting a demonstration of fabric weaving by award winning artist Sandra Rude on Feb 12 from 3–5 p.m. Rude’s pursuit of artistic knowledge took her to Handweaver’s Studio in London, England, where she learned to weave. Rude’s goal as a hand weaver is to produce interesting cloth that industry cannot generate. Sandra is a professional weaver who enjoys complex design, richly layered and unusual fabrics, and utilizing natural fibers.
Rude begins with skeins of undyed thread and dyes them in the color palette she has chosen for the project then measures the warp (lengthwise threads), winding it onto a loom. Depending on the project, Rude uses either specialized weave design software or Adobe Photoshop to assist her during the design process. Rude then uses a Jacquard loom to make beautiful tapestries and a more traditional treadle loom to weave scarves, wraps, the occasional table linens and yardage for tailoring.
Rude’s masterful work has been exhibited in national juried and invitational shows, such as the Smithsonian Craft Show and The American Craft Council. She is a current member of the Central Coast Weavers Guild; Conference of Northern California Handweavers; Complex Weavers; and the Handweaver’s Guild of America and has published articles in the Complex Weavers Journal and Weaver’s Magazine.
During the demonstration, Sandra will provide a slide show of her looms, weaving, design and dying process. The hardware and software that she uses will also be discussed.
