Tony Streiling dies at 90

–Tony Anton Streiling, 90, of Paso Robles passed away on Oct. 18, 2017 after a battle with West Nile virus and pneumonia at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Santa Clarita, California.

Tony was born on November 15, 1926 in Pancevo, Serbia. His parents were Theresa Michel Streiling and Anton Streiling. In 1929 his family emigrated to Canada and settled in Regina, Saskatchewan. Tony grew up in Canada during the Depression. Early in life he exhibited great energy and genius in mechanical and construction skills. By himself or with his brother Joe, he helped support his family by working in Port Colborne, Ontario at the International Nickel Company; in Toronto with the Canadian National Railway; and in Vancouver, British Columbia, first in sawmills and home construction, and later with the Hudson’s Bay Company.

In the early 1950s Tony married and moved to Los Angeles. He became a US citizen and worked a number of skilled mechanical jobs until he remarried Patrica Pafford Streiling in 1966 and joined Century City as an operating engineer. He rose to become the Assistant Chief Engineer of Century City, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of business and residential towers, and entertainment complexes. In 1990 Tony retired and moved to Paso Robles. He built his retirement home on Hilltop Drive almost entirely by himself, directing assistance from his son and sub-contractors.

Tony is preceded in death by his wife Pat. He is survived by the children from his first marriage, Cathy Streiling and Richard Streiling, and by the children from his second marriage, Richard Portman, Scott Portman (Rosemary), Dean Portman, and Susan Portman Smith. Tony is survived by siblings Joe Streiling, Bill Streiling, and Charlie Streiling. He is predeceased by his parents and by siblings Steve Streiling, Kay Hamill, and Helen Craigen.

Tony was man of unstoppable invention and accomplishment, and in his later years, kindness, especially with his children and with friends and neighbors in Paso Robles. His family and friends, including his special “granddaughter” Kylan, will always remember him. A luncheon and celebration of Tony and Pat’s life will be held at the Paso Robles Inn, Matador Room on Sunday, December 3rd from 12 – 2 PM.
