Assemblyman Cunningham calls on CalTrans to improve safety on Highways 41 & 46

–Earlier this week, Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham (R- Templeton) sent the following letter to Malcom Dougherty, Executive Director of California Department of Transportation, requesting his department analyze more potential safety measures to ensure driver safety on Highways 41 & 46:
“For far too long, safety concerns on Highways 41 & 46 have plagued the Central Coast and Central Valley,” Cunningham said. “I look forward to working with Mr. Dougherty and his department on developing new safety measures CalTrans can implement for this important corridor and a timeline for when these measures can be applied.”
Since March of 2017, there have been six fatal accidents on these highways, with the most recent happening this past weekend. More must be done to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers on these heavily-trafficked roads.”
On Wednesday, the assemblyman reported that he met with Director Dougherty, as well as Vice-Chairman of the Assembly Transportation Committee, Vincent Fong ( R- Bakersfield), and Assemblyman Devon Mathis (R-Visalia).
“I personally met with the CalTrans Executive Director. I was glad to see that he is taking the problem seriously and understands the gravity of the situation,” Cunningham said. “We discussed some ideas for short-term safety measures pending the long term interchange project at the 41/46 ‘Y.’ People call this stretch of highway ‘Blood Alley’ and we need to end that reputation. I will continue to advocate for improved road safety and doing everything we can to save lives.”
Assemblyman Cunningham represents all of San Luis Obispo County and a portion of Santa Barbara County, including the cities of Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, Paso Robles, Grover Beach, Lompoc, Morro Bay, Pismo Beach, Templeton, San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria and surrounding communities.
