Police searching for residential burglary suspect

Melanie Edgar

Melanie Edgar.

–The San Luis Obispo Police Department is searching for Melanie Edgar, a 20-year-old transient who allegedly stole a laptop from a Cal Poly student last week.

On Jan. 18, at 6:30 p.m., the San Luis Obispo Communications Center received the report of a residential burglary at the Mustang Village Apartment complex located at 200 N. Santa Rosa. The investigating officer responded to the home and confirmed a burglary had occurred. It was learned the suspect in this case, Melanie Edgar, had spoken to the victim and asked to use the victim’s cell phone. While using the cell phone Edgar logged onto her Facebook account. After logging off the account Edgar’S username remained on the cell phone, which was returned to the victim. While making small talk, Edgar and the victim discussed Edgar’S manicure. After a brief discussion, the victim locked her front door and left for classes.

After returning home from class the victim realized her MacBook was missing from the residence. The victim also discovered one of the windows to the home was now open. Upon further inspection, the victim located a broken fingernail under the window that matched those of Edgar. While conducting the crime scene investigation, the responding officer located fingerprint evidence at the window where entry was made into the residence. A San Luis Obispo Police Department crime analyst matched the print evidence collected at the scene to Edgar.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department is asking for the communities help in locating Edgar who is wanted for this burglary. If you have any additional details about the whereabouts of Edgar you are encouraged to contact the police department at (805) 781-7317 or Crime Stoppers at (805) 549-STOP (7867).
