Update: Fire in Atascadero burns abandoned house

Highway 101 briefly closed

–A fire started shortly before 1:45 p.m. on the west side of Highway 101 near Del Rio Road Thursday. The fire reportedly jumped across the four lanes of the highway, burning an abandoned structure.

The Del Rio on and off ramps were closed and traffic on El Camino Real was diverted around the area to Traffic Way. The fire burned a total of 8 acres.

The fires were contained later that afternoon, and crews are worked through the evening to overhaul and mop up the fire.

cal_fire_logo_large-222x300–A fire ignited on the side of the 101 freeway in Atascadero near Del Rio Road earlier this afternoon.

Traffic was stopped while crews from Cal Fire and other agencies responded. Drivers are experiencing heavy traffic.

Reports say the fire is nearly contained as of 2:30 p.m.
