Capps to attend Carrizo Plain National Monument event

Guided tour and discussion will highlight progress made since its establishmentCarizzo plains monument

–On Wednesday, June 1, Rep. Lois Capps (CA-Santa Barbara) will attend a tour of the Carrizo Plain National Monument that will highlight the changes in the area over the last 15 years since the monument gained federal designation. The event will be hosted by Friends of the Carrizo Plain, the Federal Bureau of Land Management, and the Carrizo Plain National Monument Advisory Committee. They will discuss the state of the monument, the future of the Carrizo Plain, and local conservation efforts.

The Carrizo Plain National Monument was established in 2001 to protect the area’s natural, cultural, and geological resources. President Bill Clinton’s proclamation creating the Monument was modeled on legislation authored by Rep. Capps to provide greater protection for the San Luis Obispo County resource.

The tour schedule is as follows:

10 – 10:45 a.m.: Meet at Overlook Hill on Soda Lake Road for remarks from Rep. Capps and BLM’s discussion of the state of the national monument
11 – 11:30 a.m.: Meet at the Saucito House for Friends of the Carrizo and Carrizo Plain Conservancy’s discussion on the future of the Carrizo Plain
11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.: Lunch at Saucito House (to place an order, please contact Neil at [email protected])
1 – 1:30 p.m.: Meet at the California Valley CSD office to drive to Diefenderfer House (13080 Soda Lake Road), where ecologist Brian Boroski, PhD, from HT Harvey will review local conservation efforts.
