Zoo hosting re-opening of remodeled aviary
Official ribbon cutting ceremony to be hosted Feb. 20
–The Charles Paddock Zoo has announced the opening of the newly remodeled aviary exhibit, which includes new and colorful bird species never before seen at the zoo. The aviary will be reopened to the public on Saturday, Feb. 20, following the official ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m.
Recently, an oak tree fell onto the walkthrough in the aviary at the zoo. As staff researched the best way to repair the damage to the roof caging of the structure, it became apparent that the aviary would have to be temporarily closed to the public and the birds would have to be removed while the repairs were made. Once the birds had been relocated, numerous changes and upgrades were made possible.
The water features and plantings located within the aviary were upgraded and refreshed, and aging water pumps were replaced with new, energy-efficient models that will save on utility costs. In addition, new plantings were added to increase the perching and shelter choices for the birds as well as creating an oasis-like atmosphere for the viewing public. New shade structures were added to the pathways which also provided an area to enhance the graphics. Replacing the former cage-like entrance of the aviary, the newly designed entrance is a realistic representation of a biological research station from the 1940’s. This adds another dimension to the exhibit as well as new educational opportunities.
Many of the bird species selected for addition to the new aviary are very bright and colorful, and have not previously been exhibited at the zoo. Additional birds will be added over time, and some will move into other new and upgraded areas of the zoo, as they become operational.
