Atascadero Rotary donates $2,000 to Special Olympics
The Atascadero Rotary Club recently made a donation of $2,000 to support international Special Olympics athletes who are traveling to the United States to compete in the Special Olympics World Games being held in Los Angeles. These funds are going directly to the Host Town Program, which houses and celebrates the athletes involved in the Special Olympics.
Prior to the World Games, the Host Town Program will invite athletes to participate in three days of events around San Luis Obispo County. The athletes will be able to practice for the competition, get to know community members, and have meaningful cultural experiences. Each city involved in the program will host the athletes for one day, providing meals, transportation, and entertainment.
With the support of the Atascadero Rotary Club, the City of Atascadero will be taking part in the program by hosting 100 athletes on Tuesday, July 21.
“This program really celebrates the Special Olympic athletes and all of their hard work,” says John Hollenbeck, President, Rotary Club of Atascadero. “We are honored to be a part of this remarkable event that gives athletes the opportunity to make their dreams a reality.”
Community members are invited to spend the evening with Special Olympic Athletes on July 21 at the Tuesday in the Park BBQ from 5-7 p.m. To buy tickets, participants can visit the Chamber of Commerce office prior to the event.
