Residents and visitors lined the street and sand dunes along Atascadero Road on Thursday to catch a glimpse of the pre-fabricated steel bridge being transported in over Morro Creek as part of the much-anticipated completion of the Morro Creek bike and pedestrian bridge project.

“We are witnessing history in the making,” said one local as she watched a crane operator swing the bridge into place.

The project, an extension of the Morro Bay Harborwalk, broke ground earlier this year and is expected to be completed late June. The bike and pedestrian bridge will not be open to general traffic, but is wide enough for use by emergency vehicles.

Two pieces of the bridge will be connected.

The site encyclepedia.com hails the much-anticipated bridge with “making a cycle through town a seamlessly delightful experience closer to the beach and without the hills and busy downtown streets.”

According to the event schedule at morrobay.org, an official ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at noon on July 4 in conjunction with kicking off the annual bike parade. Participants are encouraged to decorate their bikes in red, white and blue and join others in a ride across the new bridge.
