Chipping program returns to Atascadero

The program will have limited capacity

–The San Luis Obispo County Fire Safe Council has awarded Atascadero Fire & Emergency Services grant funds for hazardous fuel reduction for 2022.

The program, referred to as chipping, will be offered to those properties in the high and very high fire severity zones within city limits.

However, due to limited funding, chipping services will be completed in order of registrations received and registration will close when a maximum number of properties is reached. Registration begins on today and chipping begins on March 1.

The City of Atascadero has contracted with Hansen Bro’s Custom Farming to complete chipping services and representatives can provide ID upon request.

Chipping requirements:

  • All material must be piled near the road or driveway.
  • All material must be easily accessible.
  • Stack branches with the butt ends facing the same direction.
  • Branch diameter can be up to 5″ round, but length must not exceed 15 feet.
  • Keep piles free of household trash, processed lumber, poison oak.
  • Avoid vine vegetation, as it may jam the chipper.
